Trauma, Loss, and Lyme Disease in Children and Adolescents

What is “Trauma”:
The Oxford Dictionary defines trauma as:
“A medical condition caused by severe shock, stress or fear, especially if the harmful effects last for a long time.”
The Oxford Reference Dictionary definition is:
“A physical injury or wound or a powerful psychological shock that has damaging effects.”

Lyme disease is, indeed, a very real trauma, physically, psychologically, and for many, spiritually.  I show some of the traumatic events children experience in the examples below:

Trauma #1:

Children with tick-borne disease symptoms have often seen multiple medical practitioners and received a variety of diagnoses.  When parents ask the pediatrician to evaluate their child for Lyme disease, the parents are often berated, and told that it could not be Lyme because:

  1. the child doesn’t have a swollen knee, rash or a positive test. Often their parents are told that their child has an “anxiety disorder,” “depression”, “oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)”, “conduct disorder (CD)”, or a slew of other mental illnesses. They are then referred to a psychiatrist, who fails to look for an underlying medical illness prior to prescribing a variety of psychiatric medications that are not at all helpful or have a paradoxical effect.
  2. there is no Lyme in their state. There are, in fact, Lyme and other tick-borne diseases in all 50 states. And those doctors that deny that fact haven’t even begun to understand these illnesses.
  3. the child is making it up to get attention, so the doc won’t “buy into the behaviors” by testing for tick-borne diseases, not even knowing that Lyme is a clinical diagnosis. Some pediatricians/other primary care doctors even tell parents they are no longer willing to provide medical care for the child they have been seeing since birth!  This form of “medical abandonment” can be particularly traumatic for the whole family.

Trauma #2:

Going to school and succeeding academically becomes an issue.  School “teams” push back against the child getting supports for school (Section 504 plans or IEPs), even after the school receives appropriate documentation from the child’s Lyme doctor. Teachers, school nurses and academic teams doubt that the child is ill – accusing them of malingering and parents of indulging their child.  The team may even be more dismissive to children who need a modified school day or homebound instruction due to sleep disturbance, profound fatigue, and other disabling symptoms caused by their illness.  Teachers, coaches, and even counselors who had been trusted adults in the life of the child turn on the child, no longer believing anything the child or parent/s say about the many facets of the disabling illness the child is suffering from.

Trauma #3:

The child is isolated from peers, family and friends.  If they are excused from gym, have a motor tic, or need to stay out of the noisy cafeteria, kids with tick-borne diseases are often bullied.  All too frequently, the school does nothing to stop the bullying.  Neighbors, extended family members and friends cross boundaries and interfere, further isolating the child as well as the parents.  Grandma and grandpa, who the child loves dearly, think it’s okay to tell the parents that their Lyme specialist is a “quack”, and that they should go to another doctor.   And they do this even when the child is in the room!  Extended family members are shocked that the parents aren’t “making” the child go to bed “on time” (as if kids with a brain infection can be legislated to fall asleep at a particular hour).

Being ill with a chronic infection, actually multiple chronic infections, is of course traumatic.  When I speak with parents, they often recite multiple diagnoses:  Lyme (sometimes more than one strain), babesiosis, bartonellosis (often several strains), PANS/PANDAS, neurotoxic mold (CIRS), and many others.  In itself, these illnesses are overwhelming for the child, as well as the family.  There are  multiple symptoms that vary from day to day – pain, difficulty sleeping, difficulty focusing and concentrating, sensory issues, eating disturbances, anxiety/depression, to name a few.  But that is only the beginning.

Trauma #4

Reports may be made to Child Protective Services. Adults, who the child and family trusted, decide that there is something wrong when parents leave no stone unturned to find answers for their children’s array of disabling symptoms.  Just the fear of being reported to CPS is ever present in the minds of many parents with kids with complex tick-borne diseases.  This trauma becomes a part of the child’s trauma as well, as parents take steps to avoid CPS referrals, or have to defend their parenting against a system that has little or no Lyme knowledge.  Even the home doesn’t feel safe to the parent, child, siblings.

Where are the losses the child experiences?

  • Loss of health and functioning of course comes first. Life becomes far less predictable day to day, as symptoms wax and wane.  There is also no known predictable end to the nightmare of chronic tick-borne diseases.  The doctors can’t tell the child and parents how long it will take for these children to return to healthy functioning.
  • Loss of control over their own schedule. Trips to doctors, as well as other Lyme literate practitioners: psychotherapist, neuropsychologist, physical therapist, other medical specialists.  Each day focuses on medications need to be taken, and probiotics, as well as other supplements.
  • Loss of connections with school staff that made school a safe place to be. When teachers, administrators and counselors do not believe that the child is really ill, these kids do not feel safe reporting incidents of bullying, sexual harassment, or even physical abuse that happens to them in school or on the bus.
  • Loss of sports, music, clubs, and other activities the child loved. Without those activities, the child loses friends – the kids on the soccer team, in school orchestra, or their friends in other school clubs.
Children grieve these losses.  They also grieve those things that are more difficult to identify – the loss of the self-confidence they once had, loss of resilience.

What do these kids need from the adults in their lives?

  • It’s important for the adults to take a step back and look at the life the child has. They could then ask themselves the question “what does this child need from me?”
    • Compassion – whether the adults are parents, aunts and uncles, medical practitioners, teachers, coaches, the child’s friends’ parents, there is a role for all of them to play in helping the child with chronic Lyme, PANS/PANDAS, neuro-toxic mold, simply get through these tough times. For teachers, it is certainly challenging to have kids with Lyme in their classrooms, but if a teacher realizes how much more difficult it is to be  the child they are teaching, how can the teacher help but be compassionate?  If grandma puts herself in the child’s shoes, she will realize how tough it is for a child to be living with this illness.  What relief they can give to their grandchild and parents if they can spend time alone with their grandchild, a playdate for the kid, and a break for their parents!
    • Understanding – Adults need to educate themselves about these illnesses. Understanding, in fact, leads to compassion!

When I first started my work with Lyme patients, in 1991, one year after I was diagnosed with Lyme, there were very few resources available for patients, and none that I knew of for parents.  Now there are many places to learn about Lyme – books, websites, newsletters, webinars, and even blogs!  Learn from the child’s parents what the manifestations of the illness are, not just in general, but with that particular child.

  • Support – Adults need to look at their particular role in the child’s life to determine the nature of the support they can give. At school, all members of the IEP or 504 team needs to examine what academic help the child needs, in order to provide them with an education.  Be creative.  One school principal allowed a student with Lyme to use her private bathroom since the child’s OCD symptoms included an aversion to the kids’ bathroom, not up to the level of cleanliness that the child could tolerate. This was not a preference, but a manifestation of OCD. Some school nurses have provided brief stays in their office, for children with debilitating headaches, or sensory issues, to get a break from the noise of the classroom or cafeteria.

Extended family members can spend private time with the child. The adult and child can play fun games kept at the home of the grandma or others. By doing that, it gives parents and even siblings a much-needed break, while the child feels more connected with other adults that love them!

In my 30 years’ experience working with children with tick-borne diseases and their families, I have heard the stories of what they are going through, not only with the illness, but with the lack of understanding of the very people these parents and children counted on, prior to the child becoming ill.  The child’s symptoms, particularly neuropsychiatric symptoms, affect their functioning, leading to their becoming pariahs within the extended families and communities.  By giving these kids our compassion, understanding and support, we can make the dark and bumpy road a bit smoother and a lot brighter!

Sandy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, in private practice in Middletown, CT.  She has worked with adolescents and families since 1987, gradually realizing that many of the young people she saw had Lyme disease underlying their mental illness diagnoses.

As she referred clients for evaluation by medical practitioners who were Lyme knowledgeable, she became increasingly perplexed that mental health practitioners were not learning about tick-borne diseases.  Finding few who understood the type of psychotherapy Lyme patients needed, she decided that she would focus solely on kids and families with tick-borne and associated diseases in her practice. Sandy found that by understanding their complex illnesses, she could more effectively help them problem-solve, empowering them to move forward.

Sandy is a member of ILADS and an LDAnet Supporter of the Lyme Disease Association (LDA) and author of a section of  LDA’s LymerPrimer written for parents and educators.  She has been co-organizer of several Lyme disease conferences, is a member of Lymedisease.org, and was the Children’s and Mental Health Editor of the Lyme Times for many years.  Sandy has written many articles, given many community talks and conference presentations on Lyme, including six annual trainings for mental health practitioners with Lymeconnection.org. Lymedisease.org Vice President Dorothy Leland and Sandy co-authored the book:  When Your Child Has Lyme Disease: A Parent’s Survival Guide.

Abstract

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne disease in the USA. Beyond its tick-borne nature, however, risk factors for LD are poorly understood. We used an online questionnaire to compare LD patients and non-LD counterparts and elucidate factors associated with LD. We investigated demographic, lifestyle, and household characteristics and use of prevention measures. Associations with LD were modeled using logistic regression, and average marginal effects were estimated. In total, 185 active or past LD patients and 139 non-patients participated. The majority of respondents were white (95%) and female (65%). Controlling for age, sex, and type of residential area, pet ownership was associated with an 11.1% (p = 0.038) increase in the probability of LD. This effect was limited to cat owners (OR: 2.143, p = 0.007; dog owners, OR: 1.398, p = 0.221). Living in rural areas was associated with a 36% (p = 0.001) increase in the probability of LD compared to living in an urban area. Participants who reported knowing someone with Lyme Disease were more likely to wear insect repellant and perform tick checks. This study suggests opportunities for improved LD prevention, including advising cat owners of their increased risk. Although patterns in adoption of LD prevention methods remain poorly understood, concern about LD risk does motivate their use.

Toronto woman shares encounter with dozens of ticks in her suburban backyard

A relaxing afternoon reclining in her backyard with her dogs should have been just that — relaxing. Little did Michelle Snider know, however, they were also entertaining some unwanted, blood-sucking company: ticks she says — coming from her own backyard, in the suburban Long Branch area in west Toronto.

“I was literally picking six, seven of them off my dogs in a day,” said Snider. “And then they came into the house, and then I’m finding them on me, I had three on my back, one on my shoulder, one on my hip when I woke up.”

Snider took to Facebook to warn others of the ticks, posting video of the ones that latched onto her and her dog. She says she’s never seen them as bad as they have been this year. (See link for article)

________________

SUMMARY:

  • Rising tick numbers coincides with rising Lyme/MSIDS cases (remember Lyme is just the tip of the spear and ticks transmit 90+ infections and can reactivate latent infections).
  • 68-80% of ticks in specific Canadian locations carry Lyme while it’s lower in other areas.
  • Toronto Public Health states infection risk is low in Toronto, but then goes on to state the city has just begun tick surveillance for this year. I call this doublespeak. Ticks are everywhere – take measures!
  • The “expert” predictably blames the climate when ticks are impervious to weather and are ecoadaptive.
  • Snider has breakdown moments when she wants to move into a hotel to avoid the ticks.

While Wisconsin in 6th (per data from 1990-2019) in the nation for Lyme and a hot spot for Powassan and a virtual tick hotel, I do believe it’s far worse on the Eastern seashore. This 21st century plague does not get the attention and respect it deserves and people are in harms way in their own backyard, at the park, beach, deck, cave, rocks, on and underneath picnic tables and benches, and even in the cracks in the sidewalk.  Yep, it’s bad.

**UPDATE June, 2022**

I highly recommend reading this article as it points out the fact that similarly to COVID, all numbers regarding cases and deaths are highly suspect as long as public health ‘authorities’ are using the PCR method to detect viruses. As numbers have been used to create a false pandemic, and regardless of your level of concern it is worth noting that once again, a reported outbreak was preceded by a simulation involving the exact same pathogen.

NIH, Wuhan Were Working on Monkeypox

Wuhan Institute of Virology published on monkeypox research 3 months ago & NIH also has been researching monkeypox treatment https://reporter.nih.gov/search/sLt35… Total funding, $9,824,009 The funding supports a clinical trial to identify effective treatments for monkeypox, a re-emerging pathogen a disease of epidemic potential.

From the Discussion section of the Wuhan research:

However, this DNA assembly tool applied in virological research could also raise potential security concerns, especially when the assembled product contains a full set of genetic material that can be recovered into a contagious pathogen. Recently, a group of scientists was funded by a biotech company to synthesize a full-length horsepox virus genome and recover it into an infectious virus (Noyce et al., 2018). Not surprisingly, such a controversial achievement has received enormous attention and raised global debate on its biosecurity implications (DiEuliis et al., 2017; Koblentz, 2017, 2018; DiEuliis and Gronvall, 2018).

In this study, although a full-length viral genome would be the ideal reference template for detecting MPXV by qPCR, we only sought to assemble a 55-kb viral fragment, less than one-third of the MPXV genome. This assembly product is fail-safe by virtually eliminating any risk of recovering into an infectious virus while providing multiple qPCR targets for detecting MPXV or other Orthopoxviruses (Li et al., 2010).

Monkeypox Outbreak Follows ‘Germ-Game’ Preparations

Crossroads, May 22, 2022

JOSHUA PHILIPP

There is a new global outbreak of monkeypox, and the Biden administration is already purchasing millions of doses of recently-approved vaccines as the World Health Organization (WHO) weighs its response. A series of incidents positioned the WHO to be poised for a monkeypox outbreak, and with new powers potentially being granted to the WHO to manage global health policy, this monkeypox crisis could give the U.N. agency a serious boost to its powers.  (See link for news story)

  • According to the NY Post, the WHO is convening an emergency meeting on monkeypox.
  • Please note that the ‘alarming spread’ is a total of 200 cases WORLDWIDE, making this reminiscent of the historical 2009 Swine Flu hoax.
    • This article states H1N1 global death estimates were in the millions while the actual death toll was in the thousands (18,000) and was substantially lower than seasonal influenza (250,000-500,000).
    • The WHO declared the ‘pandemic’ over just a year later in 2010 but not before the multi-billion dollar H1N1 GSK vaccine caused incurable and lifelong brain damage in children.
  • Monkeypox virus is normally limited to tropical rain forest areas of Central and West Africa, and in fact there’s never been a global Monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa until now—in the exact week of the exact month predicted by the biosecurity folks in their pandemic simulation.
  • It is also normally spread through homosexual men and has been traced to a Pride festival in Gran Canaria, Spain which was attended by 80,000 people.
  • A zoonotic disease that presents with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, it is usually self limiting with symptoms lasting 2-4 weeks.  Fatality rate is between 3-6%. If treated, it has a 1% fatality rate, 10% if untreated.  See “Monkeypox in 5 Minutes.”
  • A cousin to smallpox, monkeypox is less contagious and causes less severe illness.
  • Transmission occurs through close contact with an infected person or animal, or through contaminated material.
  • An antiviral developed for smallpox, tecovirimat, has been licensed for monkeypox.
  • Africa is in already in an endemic phase (virus is still around but doesn’t disrupt daily life).
  • The US Government is hot on the scene with an order of 13 million Monkeypox vaccine doses from Bavarian Nordic.
  • The timing of this monkeypox outbreak of 200 cases, that for the most part is self-limiting, is suspicious as this could help bring about the WHO pandemic treaty, which would supersede the U.S. Constitution.
  • In this important video with Ex-WHO scientist David Bell, the WHO pandemic treaty will create a bureaucracy “whose existence is dependent on pandemics.” “They’ll have a very vested interest in finding outbreaks, declaring them potential pandemics, and then responding.  It’s the way that they will survive.”
  • According to a Jan. 26 letter to a virtual meeting of WHO Executive Board, Loyd Pace, Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs of the U.S. Department of HHS described the importance “equity” and “medical access” to countermeasures & the negative impacts of ‘misinformation’ and ‘disinformation’ related to the ‘pandemic.’  (For anyone paying attention it’s clear WHO power wouldn’t only include aspects of health, it would include what is considered mis and disinformation, would censor dissenters, and virtually control every aspect of life).
    • Please see this important article and notes that connects the dots to the overreaching surveillance including the WEF’s ESG score (environment, social, and corporate governance) which is similar to a credit score and is centered around sustainability & ethics. Currently given only to corporations, it isn’t a stretch to imagine this extended to individuals. Like everything else, the system is subjective to whomever decides what “ethical, diverse, and sustainable” is.  The scores can change on a whim. Companies are changing slogans, censoring content, firing controversial people, and modifying behavior to ingratiate themselves to those in power. ESG score determines how much and how easy it is for a company to secure funds & investments.  Who has the highest scores?  Microsoft, founded by Bill Gates, and Disney.  In short, the proposed surveillance covers every aspect of human life from food and health care (vaccine passports, quarantines, face coverings) to finances (banking), media content (mass censorship of dissenters and people who don’t tout the narrative) to digital surveillance, massive personal data storage, 5G, smartcities, and biosensing – all with ZERO accountability and ZERO recourse for humanity should thing go sideways, which they inevitably will do.
    • Please see 5 Minutes of WEF truth to learn that multiple democratic governments are buying into the WEF agenda supporting the mass surveillance of its citizens including SIM card registration, digital ID management and collection, Central Bank Digital Currency which is tied to your personal bank accounts and credit data and is modeled after China.
      • Unfortunately there’s more: The internet of bodies, 5G, the COVID shots, graphene, The Great Reset, and much, much more is all connected with this power-grab.
  • The proposed powers would give head of the WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus an Ethiopian Communist, the power to cherry-pick from any source, information to declare ‘pandemics’ and then dictate the required actions to be taken.
    • This is right up Tedros’ alley as under his watch he suddenly and wrongly rechristened three deadly Ethiopian cholera outbreaks to a less damaging definition of acute watery diarrhoea (AWD).  He’s also known as Dr. Coverup.
  • The WHO intends to create a“Global Health Emergency Council” that will include a “Review Committee on the Functioning of the International Health Regulations” that will hasten the process of making more amendments in the future. There’s no stopping this train once it starts.
  • The WHO has contracted German-based Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems to develop a global vaccine passport system, with plans to link every person on the planet to a QR code digital ID hence the need for 5G, data surveillance, and smart cities.
  • Proposed Biden Administration amendments give the WHO power to roll over individual countries, negating their previous requirement to consult and verify information from nations, which essentially gives unilateral powers to the WHO.  Brazil is saying “hell no” to the ‘Pandemic’ Treaty.
  • The White House released a frightening fact sheet on domestic policies supporting the WHO program:
    • The Biden administration is giving the CDC a mandatory 2.47 BILLION with some additional powers to align with the WHO.
      • This would include enhancements to domestic sentinel surveillance programs, expansion of domestic & global wastewater surveillance & investments in global genomic surveillance approaches, and global respiratory disease surveillance platforms
      • This includes video cameras and recorders that alert authorities when members of the public are seen coughing or acting sick.
      • In case this seems far-fetched, this article shows how the U.S. is on course to become a “Digital Dictatorship,” and how the mishandling of the COVID debacle is being used to further a deeper, darker agenda which includes merging national health security with public health, a frightening concept that spells doom for medical freedom.
        • A new DARPA-Like Medical Research Agency called ARPA-H, will be a part of the NIH but will be physically separate (short-hand for even less accountability), even as the U.S. General Accounting Office has found evidence of political interference occurring at the CDC & FDA.
        • This will be used to accelerate the pace of risky biomedical research.  In 2019, the same foundation and individuals currently backing Biden’s ARPA-H urged then-President Trump to create “HARPA,” to stop mass shootings before they happen through the monitoring of Americans for “neuropsychiatric” warning signs.
        • Under HARPA, SAFE HOME (Stopping Aberrant Fatal Events by Helping Overcome Mental Extremes) would suck up masses of private data from “Apple Watches, Fitbits, Amazon Echo, and Google Home” and other devices, as well as information from health care providers to determine pre-crime. The data would be analyzed by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms “for early diagnosis of neuropsychiatric violence.”
        • And in case you were unaware, the CDC has already bought cell phone data to spy on you, and recently uncovered emails reveal an ongoing pattern of lies from government officials.
  • ‘Germ Games’, a simulated war game involving a genetically modified strain of monkeypox held last year, predicted an outbreak of monkeypox to occur exactly when it did.  The independent panel reported to the WHO and is looking to make changes to the IHR, develop a treaty (pandemic) or legal tool to streamline the global approach to pandemics.  According to Keean Bexte, writing for The Counter Signal reports:

Bill Gates has announced the creation of a pandemic “GERM” team that will monitor sovereign nations and decide when they need to suspend people’s civil liberties, force them to wear masks, and close borders.

  • Bill Gates (who owns the controlling interest in the WHO) and the WHO (have been preparing for monkeypox for over a year.  Gates stated it would take about a BILLION a year for a ‘pandemic’ Task Force at the WHO.
  • Belgium is the first country to institute a compulsory 21 day quarantine for those diagnosed.
  • The WHO is meeting this week to vote. Dr. Tess Lawrie and Attorney Shabnam Palesa Mohamed, two members of the World Council for Health explain why you need to oppose this and to promote the Better Way Conference, currently under way in Bath, England.

Event 201 was hosted in October 2019—just two months before the coronavirus was first revealed in Wuhan—by the Gates Foundation, the World Economic Forum, Bloomberg, and Johns Hopkins. As with the Event 201, the participants at the Monkeypox simulation have thus far been stone silent as to their having participated in a pandemic simulation the facts of which happened to come true in real life just months later.

One person who was present at both Event 201 and the Monkeypox simulation is George Fu Gao, director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control. At event 201, Gao specifically raised the point of countering “misinformation” during a “hypothetical” coronavirus pandemic.

Will we allow history to repeat itself or will we call BS?
Monkeypox has sprung forth upon the world stage following the same playbook as SARS-CoV-2. It’s virtually a “crime-in-progress” brought to us by the same people in the same manner.

Produced by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), the participants and contributors overlap those who sat in the Event 201 simulation that predicted SARS-CoV-2, its rollout and its policies: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, China CDC, United Nations, Merck, John Hopkins, U.S. Department of State, etc.

According to the NTI scenario, by June 5, 2022 it is discovered that a “genome sequencing of monkeypox patient samples reveal that the strain in Britain contains mutations that make it resistant to existing vaccines.” This revelation prompts “aggressive measures” such as “shutting down mass gatherings, imposing social-distancing measures, and implementing mask mandates.”  Source

25+ Human Rights Group Oppose Zoom’s Planned A.I. Tech “that can scan users’ faces and speed to determine their emotions”

By B.N. Frank

Lawsuits have been filed against Zoom for proven privacy and security issues associated with its teleconferencing technology.  So far the company has paid hundreds of millions of dollars to settle (see 1, 2).  Nevertheless, the company is developing new Artificial Intelligence (A.I) technology to scan users’ faces to determine their emotions.

From Tech Times:

Zoom Starts Developing New AI Technology, Upsets Human Rights Groups

April Fowell, Tech Times

Last month, it is reported that Zoom will develop a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that can scan users’ faces and speed to determine their emotions. Now, the platform is in its early stages of development and is now receiving some backlash from several human rights groups, such as Access Now, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Muslim Justice League.

Over 25 rights groups sent a letter to Zoom CEO, Eric Yuan, on Wednesday to halt the company’s further research into emotion-based AI.  (See link for article)
