Pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2: the knowns and unknowns

Alessandro SetteShane Crotty

T cell reactivity against SARS-CoV-2 was observed in unexposed people; however, the source and clinical relevance of the reactivity remains unknown. It is speculated that this reflects T cell memory to circulating ‘common cold’ coronaviruses.

As data start to accumulate on the detection and characterization of SARS-CoV-2 T cell responses in humans, a surprising finding has been reported: lymphocytes from 20–50% of unexposed donors display significant reactivity to SARS-CoV-2 antigen peptide pools1,2,3,4.

In conclusion, it is now established that SARS-CoV-2 pre-existing immune reactivity exists to some degree in the general population. (See link for full article)

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS FOR COVID-19 PROPHYLAXIS AND SYMPTOM DE-ESCALATION

Chris Newton

Research Director CIMMBER (Center for Immuno-Metabolism, Microbiome and Bio-Energetic Research)

A week ago on Friday 3rd July 2020, a call was put out on LinkedIn to biomedical scientists and physicians and all informed individuals to form Consensus-COVID, an initiative to establish a consensus list of non-prescription agents for COVID prophylaxis and symptom de-escalation. The call has so far raised around 1900 views and responses from physicians, biomedical scientists and various other professionals. What follows is a distillation of these suggestions into two lists, one for COVID prophylaxis and the other for immediate use following the onset of symptoms.

Over the past three to four months, numerous articles have been written and posted at the this site and the site of other individuals in the list below, particularly Jeannette Hospers, and Dr Ian Brighthope, concerning what might be considered a ‘trinity mix’ for COVID-19, namely vitamin C, vitamin D and a zinc salt. These three compounds will form the immutable core of both consensus lists. For more information on this combination, I would thoroughly recommend visiting the site of Dr Ian Brighthope and listening to a recent interview.

The lists below are an amalgamation of suggestions made by the following individuals in response to the call:

  • Dr John H Abeles MD, General Partner at Northlea Partners, West Palm Beach, Florida Area
  • Dr Alex (Kennerly) Vasquez DO ND DC FACN. Physician, Researcher, Presenter, Academician, Editor, Consultant
  • Dr Ian Brighthope, Founder and Managing Director at Entoura Pty Ltd, Greater Melbourne Area
  • David Steenblock, BS, MS, DO. President, CEO, Chief Scientist, Research Physician at Personalized Regenerative Medicine, San Clemente, California
  • Dr Alan Vinitsky. Physician, Owner at Enlightened Medicine. Owner Enlightened Nutritionals & Illumivites. Washington D.C. Metro Area
  • Dr William A. Shaver. Founder at Center of Meaning in Health and Disease, Lubbock, Texas Area
  • Dr. Larry G. Martin. Cellular research related to oxidative stress. Albany, Oregon
  • Dr Emma Derbyshire. Research, Writing, Media Liasons, Epsom, Surrey, United Kingdom
  • Dr Jeannette Hospers. Senior Scientist/Clinical Trial Manager, Basel Area, Switzerland
  • Dr Chris Newton. Director Center for Immuno-Metabolism, Microbiome and Bio-Energetic Research, Yorkshire, UK

It must be stated that the lists below do not constitute medical advice. The clinical science and indeed clinical philosophy behind this consensus is that agents will support immune cells and other somatic cell types by acting as immuno-modulators and not immuno-suppressants. In particular, it is hoped they will prevent the accumulation of oxidants and help tailor a more appropriate immune response to SARS-CoV-2. For an excellent review on optimal nutrition and antiviral immunity see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7230749/

TABLE 1

1594895370673-2

The list above is relatively extensive and may be onerous for some individuals. A compromise might be made with supplement from companies such as Now Foods. They manufacture a combination of vitamins and minerals with addition of CoQ10 and other substances. The levels in these mixture are too low for vitamins C, and D and some minerals like magnesium, but for some of the B vitamins, they approach or exceed the lower limit in Table 1. By choosing single agent supplements, it will be possible to reach the upper limit of the range in Table 1.

In comparison to the list presented on July 3rd 2020, there are several additions and also one deletion- melatonin. This compound might be considered ‘optional’, to be taken before sleep in late evening at a dose level of 6-12mg. At least in the UK, melatonin is not easy to source and so one might consider natural products such as Feverfew. For an excellent review on natural sources of melatonin see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5409706/ .

Whilst choline is easily available as a supplement, one might also consider natural sources, such as eggs (three eggs a day will reach the dose in Table 1). Also, Brazil nuts are high in selenium and 4-5 whole nuts will provide around 200 microg.

Although it has been suggested that butyrate is appropriate to add as a supplement, for now, it is considered ‘optional’. So, 500-1000mg per day might be appropriate. This substance is produced by bacterial fermentation in the gut and it is known to inhibit inflammatory responses (see post at this site and the work of Dr Larry Martin). The decision not to add butyrate to the list in Table 1 may change following further discussion with Dr Larry Martin and Dr William Shaver.

TABLE 2

1596824042032

Immediately at the onset of symptoms increase ascorbic acid (AA) intake and vitamin D as indicated in Table 2 above. Also increase zinc and quercetin along with NAC. The latter is a thiol antioxidant and a glutathione precursor.

Whilst dropping back to the protocol in Table 1 for vitamins C (0.5-2g four times daily) and D (4000IU/day- but have blood 25OHD measured if possible and maintain D at around 80-90nmolar), after symptoms have abated, all other components in Table 1 should be maintained, if possible, at the higher dose levels for 2 weeks after onset of symptoms. Following this period, the prophylaxis ‘protocol’ of Table 1 should be resumed.

None of the above is ‘set in stone’. They are merely suggestions and a continuing dialogue concerning merits of substances (and amounts) included, and others not included, would be much appreciated.

Five years ago, Alex Patsan thought she was going to die. The Australian mother of two was unable to walk or talk properly and lacking the strength to even cut up an apple for her children’s lunchboxes, the mum-of-two began the heartbreaking task of preparing her family for what seemed like the inevitable end to her battle with an insidious illness known as Lyme Disease.

“It was 2015,” she said, “and it was my worst year. The pain was terrible and the inflammation in my brain was so bad I remember thinking I better prepare my children in case I didn’t make it.”  (See link for article)

Who Is Getting Rich Off Coronavirus Pandemic?

Analysis by Dr. Joseph MercolaFact Checked

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • Forbes compiled a list of 10 health care billionaires who collectively raked in more than $7 billion since March 11, 2020 — the day the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic
  • Topping the list is Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, the biotech firm that’s seen as the frontrunner for developing a COVID-19 vaccine
  • As of June 18, 2020, U.S. billionaire wealth increased $584 billion, or 20%, since the start of the pandemic
  • Since March 18, the number of U.S. billionaires increased from 614 to 643; during the same period, more than 45.5 million Americans filed for unemployment
  • CNBC’s Jim Cramer said the pandemic and resulting lockdown paved the way for “one of the greatest wealth transfers in history”
  • While many big businesses are coming out unscathed or even in a better position financially, small businesses are closing their doors

In May 2020, the U.S. unemployment rate was 13.3%,1 which means 21 million Americans were unemployed. Not surprisingly, financial stress is a major concern, with 88% of Americans surveyed by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) saying that the COVID-19 pandemic is creating stress for their personal financial situation.2

Fifty-four percent were particularly worried about having enough money saved for emergency savings or retirement, while another 48% were worried about paying bills.

A report by the Well Being Trust (WBT) and the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care that up to 75,000 people may die during the COVID-19 pandemic from drug or alcohol misuse and suicide, which they deemed “deaths of despair” caused, in part, by unprecedented economic failure paired with massive unemployment.3

This experience of scarcity and financial uncertainty is not being felt by all, however. In stark contrast, many of the richest among us — particularly health care and biotech billionaires — have gotten even richer due to COVID-19, profiting handsomely off the pandemic that’s left the general public financially reeling.

Pandemic Propels Moderna CEO to the Billionaire’s Club

Forbes compiled a list of 10 health care billionaires who collectively raked in more than $7 billion since March 11, 2020 — the day the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.4 Topping the list is Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, the biotech firm that’s seen as the frontrunner for developing a COVID-19 vaccine. According to Forbes:5

“When the WHO declared a pandemic, Bancel’s estimated net worth was some $720 million. Since then, Moderna’s stock has rallied more than 103%, lifting his fortune to an estimated $1.5 billion. A French citizen, Bancel first joined the billionaire ranks on April 2, when Moderna’s stock rose on the news that the firm was planning to begin phase two trials of its vaccine.”

Moderna partnered with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) headed by Dr. Anthony Fauci to create the vaccine. In February 2020, its stock price increased 78.1% when it announced that its messenger RNA vaccine was ready for clinical trials.6The company’s CEO has become a new billionaire overnight,” wrote Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder and president of the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC).7

Moderna began human trials of its experimental mRNA vaccine in March 2020, and its stock soared again in May, hitting $29 billion, even though the company currently doesn’t sell any products,8when it released early results from its Phase 1 study of 45 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 55 — the first released from a study involving human volunteers.

Moderna’s press release9 stated that 25 participants who received two doses of its low or medium dose vaccine had levels of binding antibodies — the type that are used by the immune system to fight the virus but do not prevent viral infections — at levels approximating or exceeding those found in the blood of patients who recovered from COVID-19.10

Data for the more significant neutralizing antibodies, which stop viruses from entering cells, was reported for only eight people, with Moderna stating that levels in each of these initial participants met or exceeded antibody levels seen in recovered COVID-19 patients.

Four study subjects experienced a “Grade 3” adverse event, which is described by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as “severe or medically significant but not immediately life-threatening; hospitalization or prolongation of hospitalization indicated; limiting self-care” such as “bathing, dressing and undressing, feeding self, using the toilet, taking medications.”11

During Phase 2 trials, 600 people will receive the vaccine, while a Phase 3 trial is expected to start in July 2020 — an unprecedented move in terms of typical vaccine development timelines. Bancel owns a 9% stake in the company, which received a grant of up to $483 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to accelerate its COVID-19 vaccine development.12

Nine More COVID-19 Billionaires

Making up the rest of Forbes’ list is a mix of entrepreneurs, biotech executives and diagnostic test makers, which come from seven different countries:13

1. Gustavo Denegri — With a net worth of $4.5 billion, which is up 32% since the beginning of the pandemic, Denegri has a 45% stake in DiaSorin, a biotech company based in Italy. DiaSorin makes swab-based diagnostic tests for COVID-19 as well as antibody blood testing kits for the virus.

2. Seo Jung-Jin — Jung-Jin co-founded Celltrion, a biopharma company in Seoul. Jung-Jin’s net worth is $8.4 billion, up 22% thanks to the company’s experimental antiviral treatment for COVID-19, along with a self-administered diagnostic test that gives results in 15 minutes, which is expected to come to the market this summer.

3. Alain Mérieux — Mérieux’s $7.6 billion net worth is tied to BioMérieux, the diagnostic testing company he founded in 1963. It’s a branch of Institut Mérieux, a medical company founded by his grandfather in 1897. BioMérieux developed a faster version of a COVID-19 diagnostic test kit that was released in March 2020.

4. Maja Oeri — Oeri is a descendent of Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, the founder of pharmaceutical giant Roche. She owns about 5% of Roche’s shares, with a net worth of $3.2 billion; Roche has clinical trials ongoing for its arthritis drug tocilizumab, which it is hoping to transition to a COVID-19 treatment, as well as a serology test to detect antibodies in people who have had COVID-19.

5. Leonard Schleifer — His net worth is $2.2 billion, a rise of 11% due to the pandemic. He founded Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, which is conducting clinical trials of its rheumatoid arthritis drug sarilumab on COVID-19 patients.

6. George Yancopoulos — Yancopoulos is Regeneron‘s chief scientific officer; his net worth is $1.2 billion (up 14% since the beginning of the pandemic).

7. and 8. Thomas and Andreas Struengmann — The Struengmann twins have a net worth of $6.9 billion. They first made their fortune by selling generic drug company Hexal to Novartis in 2005, and they invest in biotech and health care companies. One of their investments is BioNTech, which partnered with Pfizer and Fosun Pharmaceuticals on a COVID-19 vaccine that’s currently in human trials.

9. Li Xiting — Xiting cofounded Mindray Medical International, China’s largest medical equipment producer. It tripled its production capacity of ventilators since the start of the pandemic. Xiting’s net worth is $12.6 billion, which is up 1% due to COVID-19.

US Billionaires $584 Billion Richer Thanks to COVID-19

The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), in partnership with Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF), published a report highlighting what they call America’s “pre-existing condition”: extreme wealth inequality.14 IPS is regularly updating U.S. unemployment and billionaire wealth during the pandemic, which shows the great divide among the wealthy and the majority of Americans.

As of June 18, 2020, U.S. billionaire wealth increased $584 billion, or 20%, since the start of the pandemic.15 Meanwhile, since March 18, the number of U.S. billionaires increased from 614 to 643; during the same period, more than 45.5 million Americans filed for unemployment. Other striking inequalities revealed by the report include:16

  • Jeff Bezos‘s fortune increased by $25 billion from January 1, 2020, to April 15, 2020; the wealth surge alone is greater than Honduras’ Gross Domestic Product, which was $23.9 billion in 2018
  • From January 1, 2020 to April 10, 2020, the wealth of 34 of the richest U.S. billionaires increased tens of millions of dollars; eight of them had their net worth rise by more than $1 billion
  • From March 18 to April 10, 2020, U.S. billionaire wealth surged by nearly 10%, rising $282 billion; during the same period, more than 22 million Americans lost their jobs
  • U.S. billionaire wealth increased 1,130% from 1990 to 2020; U.S. median wealth grew by 5.37% during the same period
  • The tax obligations of U.S. billionaires decreased 79% between 1980 and 2018, when measured as a percentage of wealth

As noted by Inequality.org, IPS’ sister site:

“The top five billionaires — Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett and Larry Ellison — saw their wealth grow by a total of $101.7 billion, or 26%. They captured 17.4% of the total wealth growth of all 600-plus billionaires in the last three months. The fortunes of Bezos and Zuckerberg together grew by nearly $76 billion, or 13% of the $584 billion total.

‘This orgy of wealth shows how fundamentally flawed our economic system is,’ said Frank Clemente, ATF’s executive director. ‘In three months about 600 billionaires increased their wealth by far more than the nation’s governors say their states need in fiscal assistance to keep delivering services to 330 million residents.

Their wealth increased twice as much as the federal government paid out in one-time checks to more than 150 million Americans. If this pandemic reveals anything, it’s how unequal our society has become and how drastically it must change.”17

‘One of the Greatest Wealth Transfers of History’

CNBC’s Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s Mad Money and a former hedge fund manager, said the pandemic and resulting lockdown paved the way for “one of the greatest wealth transfers in history.18 While many experts are predicting a V-shaped recovery for the stock market, which has been quickly rebounding, “that has almost nothing to do with a V-shaped recovery in the economy,” Cramer said.

While most big businesses are coming out of the state-ordered lockdowns largely unscathed, many small businesses have closed their doors. Already, Chapter 11 bankruptcies are up 48% compared to 2019, and the worst may be yet to come. Even as businesses are increasingly allowed to open for business, lower occupancy limits will continue financial hardships, despite relief funds provided by the government.

“… [I]n the end, the stimulus package probably won’t be enough, for one simple reason,” Cramer said. “It’s not going to work because of social distancing.”19 Meanwhile, big business will continue to thrive. “The bigger the business, the more it moves the major averages, and that matters because this is the first recession where big business … is coming through virtually unscathed, if not going for the gold.”20

The transfer of wealth from average people to the richest through a planned economic collapse is ongoing, and something that’s slated to get even more severe if a COVID-19 vaccine is released. In an article positing the question, “Is It Too Late to Buy Moderna Stock?” The Motley Fool suggested:21

“Let’s assume that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine proves to be successful and wins regulatory approvals in the U.S. and other major markets. If the company was able to price its coronavirus vaccine similarly to flu vaccines currently on the market, its list price would probably be in the ballpark of at least $40.

If we also assume at least 2 billion doses of the vaccine would be given per year, Moderna could be looking at annual revenue of $80 billion.”

Coronavirus: Why everyone was wrong

The immune response to the virus is stronger than everyone thought

The original article was published in the Swiss magazine Weltwoche (World Week) on June 10th. The author, Beda M Stadler is the former director of the Institute for Immunology at the University of Bern, a biologist and professor emeritus. Stadler is an important medical professional in Switzerland, he also likes to use provoking language, which should not deter you from the extremely important points he makes. This article is about Switzerland and it does not suggest that the situation is exactly the same globally. I am advocating for local measures according to local situations. And I advocate for looking at real data rather than abstract models. I also suggest to read to the end, because Stadler makes crucial points about testing for Sars-CoV-2.

The coronavirus is slowly retreating. What actually happened in the past few weeks? The experts have missed basic connections. The immune response against the virus is much stronger than we thought.

By Beda M Stadler

This is not an accusation, but a ruthless taking stock [of the current situation]. I could slap myself, because I looked at Sars-CoV2- way too long with panic. I am also somewhat annoyed with many of my immunology colleagues who so far have left the discussion about Covid-19 to virologists and epidemiologists. I feel it is time to criticise some of the main and completely wrong public statements about this virus.

  1. Firstly, it was wrong to claim that this virus was novel.
  2. Secondly, It was even more wrong to claim that the population would not already have some immunity against this virus.
  3. Thirdly, it was the crowning of stupidity to claim that someone could have Covid-19 without any symptoms at all or even to pass the disease along without showing any symptoms whatsoever.

But let’s look at this one by one. (See link for article)

A very important article, please read the original in the link.  Stadler talks about the immunology of common sense – which seems to have left the entire human race at present and we desperately need it back.

Highlights:
  1. It’s NOT entirely a new virus: The very name of it tips the hand – Sars-CoV-2 is related to the Sars Virus, as well as other coronaviri – of which makeup 10-15% of seasonal flu each yearThe second tip of the hand came from vaccine development in that studies that show this “so-called” novel virus is very strongly related to Sars-1 as well as other beta-coronaviri. Sars-Cov-2 isn’t new but a seasonal cold virus that mutated and disappears in summer.
  2. Most people have immunity.  This tipping of the hand came from testing.  The 1st test was put together from an old antibody test for Sars-1.  COVID-19 was also less significant where Sars-1 previously existed – showing that our immune system considers both viruses partially identical.  A paper showed that 34% of people in Berlin, never before in contact with Sars-CoV-2, showed T-cell immunity against it.
  3. Epidemiologists, because they still believe the myth that there is no immunity in the population, cling to the idea of a “second wave”.  He states they are more interested in a death culture of how many die, not in the truth that numbers could be saved.
  4. Children are essentially immune.  For every disease that doesn’t attack a certain group, the conclusion should be that that group is immune, but this common sense is lacking with COVID-19.  He calls those without this common sense “immunity deniers.”  These deniers “conjured out of a hat” the idea of “silent carriers,” a completely bogus term with no science behind it.  Evidently you don’t need symptoms anymore to be sick!  The next magic trick is that supposedly those who aren’t sick could still spread it to others.  The WHO is about the only group that refrained from this nonsense.  The author gives a great brief summary of what happens within the body once it’s attacked by pathogenic viri.  PLEASE READ IT!  We can’t afford for people to be this stupid again!  The stupidity is killing people and our economy.  He reminds the reader that even if infectious viri are long dead, a PCR test can still come back positive (just like Lyme).  He also states it’s highly likely that a majority of positive cases are purely due to viral debris.
  5. The next tipping of the hand moment came when it was discovered this virus has an extremely long incubation time of 2-14 days and reports of 22-27 days with most patients no longer shedding the virus after 5 days. This demonstrates a base immunity.  This virus has exposed medical/nutritional problems (bad diet, malnourishment, weakened immune systems, etc.) Because these compromised people have poor health, they don’t have enough antibodies and subsequently have an exaggerated immune response (just like with Lyme). When this happens rarely in children, (called Kawasaki Syndrome) they used it to  stoke yet more panic.  BTW this is easily cured by getting antibodies from healthy blood donors of people who went through coronavirus colds. So someone’s immunity is used as a treatment for a supposedly non-existent immunity in a population.  Think on that for a moment!  How would this treatment work if there wasn’t immunity involved? The virus is gone now but he states will probably come back in winter but it will NOT be a second wave – just a cold.  He states the young walking around with face-masks on would be better off wearing a helmet because the risk of something falling on their head is greater than getting a serious case of COVID-19. According to John P A Ioannidis’s work, those below the age of 65 make up only .6 to 2.6% of all fatal COVID cases. The strategy should be and should always have been to protect those over age 65.  A second lock-down is ludicrous. He states scaremongers should apologize – especially politicians who are stressing testing when they don’t even know what the test measures and the government for creating an app frightening everyone about positive cases even if they’re not infectious!

Telling quote:

“The entire world simply claimed that there was no immunity…..that wasn’t science, but pure speculation based on a gut feeling that was then parroted by everyone.” Beda Stadler

Thank God for men like Stadler who are willing to tell the truth even when most are spouting an accepted narrative.  I’m sure he will face back-lash from this, just as anyone else does who points out the ludicrousness of all of this.  Our freedoms have been taken away and most are so scared from misinformation they don’t even care.

We are in a sad place indeed, and it has little to do with a virus – but an uninformed response to it.
Will the real doctors, health professionals, and researchers please stand up?!  Rational society desperately needs you.
