A US Federal Agency’s Definitive Report on How Fluoride Harms Children’s Brains. What Now?

By Leo Cashman

9/19/24

Those who followed the multi-year fluoride trial saga know that the government’s much touted report on whether fluoride harms children’s brain has finally been released and seen the light of day. Getting it released at this late date wasn’t easy, as there seemed to be efforts to delay it and suppress it. It had been peer reviewed again, and reviewed again, to a farcical degree.

Release of report halted

Then, the report was finally completed and slated to be released in May of 2022. Its release was mysteriously halted, despite the fact that the judge in the fluoride trial was waiting for its release for more than a year, and it was supposedly needed in order to provide pivotal evidence in the trial after years of delay and waiting. Thanks to FOIA requests brought by the plaintiff’s attorneys, it was revealed that the release of the report had been secretly blocked by an order from someone high in the public health hierarchy: Admiral Levine, assistant Secretary of Health. The judge, exasperated, ordered that the preliminary version of the report be released to the court, so that its conclusions could be brought into evidence and the trial could be completed. This, on his part, allowed the final leg of the trial to be completed this past February; however, it is September, and we all are still awaiting a verdict.

18 of 19 studies show impact on intelligence

Now that we have the official National Toxicology Program (NTP) report, it is time to ask: what does it say? Are there any surprises to be found in it? In its description of the scientific details, the report did find confirmation, as expected, of fluoride as being toxic to children’s brains. Of the 19 highest quality studies, 18 of them found that higher levels of fluoride exposure were significantly associated with lower intelligence in children. But there were some statements in the report that will give the dental establishment something to cling to: the clearest evidence that fluoride is a brain neurotoxin was found at levels of 1.5 parts per million, which is higher than the 0.7 parts per million that the CDC now recommends for water fluoridation.

Multiplicity of factors add to fluoride exposure

But a counter to that argument is that total fluoride intake – with some coming from food, toothpastes, drugs, and pollution – varies greatly, and susceptibility varies greatly too, with some people being harmed more easily than others. So, each side of the fluoride debate will still have talking points in the ongoing argument over fluoridation, and the big media will obviously favor the vested interests that make up the fluoride promoters.

Fluoride in the food supply and pharmaceutical increase exposure

Those who have followed the fluoride issue know how broad and powerful those players on the fluoride team are. Fluoride is found at much higher levels in many beverages and foods than it is in fluoridated water. So Big Ag and Big Food want the fluoride cover-up. Big Pharma knows that about ten per-cent of its drugs use fluorine as an ingredient, including Prozac and the notorious antibiotic, Cipro (They both carry FDA black box warnings). Heavy industry, from steel to coal, aluminum factories and phosphate fertilizer plants pose a hazard to workers and nearby communities alike.

ADA and media can’t admit they were wrong

In particular, the phosphate fertilizer plants are capturing their hazardous fluoride fumes to keep them out of the environment and then have the gall to sell them to chemical companies who peddle them to city water works, which put the toxic waste into the water people drink – that’s what is called water fluoridation. So heavy industry does want to let go of the myths about fluoride being “safe and effective.” Big dentistry, as with the American Dental Association doesn’t want to admit that it was profoundly wrong over the last 80 years in insisting that every dental student in every dental school be taught that fluoride use and water fluoridation are fundamentally needed to assure children’s dental health. Big media itself has a stake in the debate, because it doesn’t want to admit that it was profoundly negligent in its coverage of the fluoride issue over the last 80 years.

Team Fluoride

Instead of telling the public about what honest scientists had actually found, it has steadfastly held to the lies and the cover-up of the dental-industrial-governmental establishment when telling us what to believe. So, we shouldn’t expect the big players of Team Fluoride to admit that they have been in the wrong, and this will even be true regardless of what the verdict the trial judge in the fluoride lawsuit comes up with. If the defendant, the Environmental Protection Agency loses, it likely may very well appeal the verdict, thus allowing the harm to America’s children to continue on for months and maybe years.
Expert fired; computers destroyed by “accident”? It has never been easy for the scientific truth about fluoride to see the light of day. The great toxicologist Phyllis Mullenix, PhD, seemed destined to turn the tide against the fluoride myths when she found powerful evidence in 1989-1990 that fluoride was toxic to her test animals.
She had the integrity to publish anyway, despite warnings that she would lose her prestigious job at the Forsyth Dental Institute, if she did so. By 1994, she had been given a termination notice from Forsyth and in the final months of being there before she left, her multi-million high tech computer equipment had been destroyed, harmed by an inexplicable “rain” that had fallen from the ceiling. And the well cared for test animals had mysteriously taken ill and died. She never got another NIH grant or a job anywhere, in any university or research facility. In recalling her treatment by Forsyth and by the NIH research establishment, she described her experience as “Mister Toad’s Wild Ride.”
Crops and farm animals severely harmed She had come to know first-hand how government and industry bias could trump science of the highest quality. But to her astonishment, it would rise to new heights in 1997, after several reporters contacted her and told her about of the real origins of water fluoridation, going back to the 1940s and the atomic bomb project (“The Manhattan Project”). DuPont’s chemical facility in Deepwater, Delaware, was facing a flurry of lawsuits from farmers who, being near the plant, had crops and farm animals that were severely harmed by toxic fluoride from the chemical plant. The plant was being used to make uranium hexafluoride, needed for Uranium isotope separation for the bomb project. It was Harold Hodge, PhD, the bomb project’s chief fluoride expert, who boldly proposed that the dental establishment should send around a memo to the communities in New Jersey claiming, falsely of course, that a little bit of fluoride in their drinking water would protect children’s teeth from decay.

Harold Hodge, PhD

America’s biggest scientific fraudster?

Hodge also brazenly green-washed the image of fluoride for industrial plants that were exposing their workers to unsafe amounts of fluoride. Hodge’s own research found that fluoride was harmful to the dentician of workers – most of them lost all of their teeth! – but Hodge falsified the evidence in a published scientific article that provided for the fluoride cover-up needs of American industry, including the bomb project which employed tens of thousands of workers, many of whom were disabled and many who died. In short, Harold Hodge, who died in 1990, known as America’s leading fluoride expert, was actually America’s biggest scientific fraudster and one who did incalculable harm to America in the sweep of time since then. Most people never learn that there is such a thing as a criminal-scientist.
CIA and Department of Defense role?

The revelations about the origins of fluoridation, Harold Hodge, and the bomb project particularly touched Phyllis Mullenix personally when she learned about them in 1997. For, the bizarre twist is that in the final years of Hodge’s life, he worked at Forsyth Dental Institute alongside Phyllis Mullenix as a sort of a fluoride research team helper. In a kindly way, he was always curious about her progress and what she was finding out. What she was finding out in 1989-1990, Harold Hodge had already secretly discovered half a century earlier in the 1940s, reported to all the players in government and the defense department but then lied about in his statements to the media and the public and in his published scientific papers. His role at Forsyth was, in all probability, to be a mole, to report the research findings to the CIA (which he had deep connections with) as well as the DOD and other government contacts. He was likely a spy for those who wanted to know the scientific truth but also to keep a lid on what the public would be allowed to know.

Expert asked not to publish findings

So, with that, Phyllis more fully understood the depth of the fluoride cover-up. The powers that be wanted to know the truth about fluoride, including its harmful effects on the brain and behavior. But that was to better manage the use of fluoride and its impacts on brains and behavior, not to reverse course on a program that was harming American’s health. When they brazenly asked her not to publish her important results, they expected her to fall in line and keep quiet to protect her career as a scientist.

Christopher Bryson

The Fluoride Deception

This story and much more is covered in Christopher Bryson’s book The Fluoride Deception (2004). At 374 pages, and with thousands of scientific references and citations, this is the work of a brave world-class investigative journalist who covered the scientific excellence and bravery of the top scientific researchers of the last century. The book has chapters on Europe’s top fluoride researcher, Kaj Roholm. Back in the 1940s, Roholm was a brilliant and honest Danish researcher who, unlike Harold Hodge, told the truth on his continent publishing a 354-page book on it. But because of Roholm’s integrity, most of mainland Europe learned of the harmful effects of fluoride and never fluoridated its water.

EPA “experts” ignorant of key research

In the closing hours of the epochal fluoride trial, EPA’s science expert, David Savitz was asked to comment on the work of Phyllis Mullenix and Kaj Roholm. But he claimed he knew nothing of them and had never heard of them. So, the works of Mullenix and Roholm never became part of the record in the fluoride trial because EPA ‘experts’ knew nothing about them.

Conclusion? What most people believe about fluoride is based on questionable science. That is the intended result of decades of media-government and ADA misinformation. That misinformation persists regardless of what Phyllis Mullenix or any other scientist has published. Old cover-ups die hard. There are powerful interests that want to keep them in place. Do not expect to be handed the truth on a silver platter by a governmental agency. If a governmental body imposes a heavy-handed health measure on you, it is good to be skeptical and to push back.

What Are The Prospects for the U.S. Since EU Has Banned Dental Mercury Amalgams?

The European Union Council has confirmed the decision of the EU Parliament to ban dental mercury amalgams starting in 2025.

Mercury is one of the most harmful substances among the seemingly limitless pollutants present in a modern industrial nation. From the early “Mad Hatter” archetypes based on hatters using mercury in their work, to massive mercury pollution in Japan in the 20th Century, this substance has had a devastating impact on human health. Now Europe has stepped up with a ban on mercury-containing amalgam dental fillings.

World-wide momentum for a ban

On May 30th, 2024, we received confirmation that the European Union is banning dental amalgam fillings, which are about half mercury. The use and export of amalgam must end on January 1, 2025, and the manufacture and the import are banned as of July 1, 2026. The EU action applies to all 27 of its member states. The EU’s action comes on the heels of increasing crackdowns on dental amalgam in Europe, with bans by Sweden, Norway, and Denmark in 2009 and, in more recent years, moves by Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Moldova to also ban amalgams. There are ten other countries that are discouraging amalgam use, adding to the world-wide momentum against dental amalgam, a momentum that the US and its closest allies, Canada, the UK and Australia have so far resisted. That leaves the question: what is wrong with the US and its close allies? Can’t they see the same science and the same abundant clinical evidence that amalgam fillings, which are half mercury, are harmful? It is estimated that of all the people who have dental restorations, at least half of them have mercury amalgam fillings.

Alfred Stock’s important research

There has been a pitched battle in the US over the amalgam issue for three or four decades. Looking back even farther, we can also mention the work of Professor Alfred Stock, a prominent German chemist who, in the 1920s, discovered that his forgetfulness and brain fog were being caused by his own dental amalgam fillings. Stock’s health improved after he had his own amalgams removed, and he then diagnosed many friends’ problems and encouraged them to have their amalgams removed. He published more than thirty scientific papers on the subject, until his laboratory and most of his records were destroyed by allied bombing raids in World War II. That unfortunate bombing ended his research, and he died in near obscurity. (1)

Alfred Stock

Dr. Hal Huggins

But the torch never went out

A Brazilian dentist named Pinto incorporated Professor Stock’s science into his own investigations, and he passed on the information to his dentist son, Dr. Olympio Pinto. The latter met up with American dentist Dr. Hal Huggins at a conference in Mexico City in 1973. Pinto revealed that mercury from dental amalgams does leak, and Hal Huggins became a leading investigator of the issue in North America. On into the 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Huggins became a leading critic of amalgams, the head of a busy biological dental clinic in Colorado Springs, CO, and a favorite target of the American Dental Association’s (ADA’s) hostile attacks.

CBS 60 Minutes was a rare truthful media event

In 1990, CBS 60 Minutes did a resounding episode on the dental amalgam issue that was seen on TV by 30 million viewers. The ADA agreed to be interviewed on the show provided that Hal Huggins was not included in the program as one of the amalgam critics. The program catapulted the amalgam issue into public prominence and fueled the growth of holistic dental practices, the growth of scientific investigations, and a surge in consumer activism. DAMS, Dental Amalgam Mercury Solutions was formed in 1990, to educate the public, complementing the work already being done by the professional academies, IAOMT, IABDM and Holistic Dental Association. All of these groups emphasize the importance of having your amalgams removed safely, by a well-trained, well-equipped biological dentist, if they are going to be removed at all. (2)

 Witchhunts of the 1990s

But the 1990s saw major attacks by state dental boards against Hal Huggins in Colorado and against many other dentists in many other states. In 1995, the Colorado Dental Board took away Huggins’ license to practice, and the boards in many other states acted similarly. It was an era of “witchhunts,” with dentists who were removing dental amalgams of their patients being accused of practicing outside of the “standard of care” and of being “unethical.” The local media generally went along with the portrayal of Huggins and his followers as both being driven by greed and going against what the science says – science as described by the ADA.

The Watson-Burton bill

In 2003 a Congressional panel held hearings on the dental amalgam issue and what science actually says. Republican Dan Burton and Democrat Diane Watson jointly became chief authors of a bill to phase out dental amalgam fillings. It was assigned to the House Commerce Committee where it languished and died because it did not get nearly enough co-sponsors to get it a hearing in the committee. Sadly, the media let the issue whither for lack of attention; ever since the CBS 60 Minutes show in 1990, the major media has either ignored the issue or tells the ADA’s biased side of it.

The CATs media multimillion dollar blitz

In April of 2006, some very biased NIH-sponsored studies known as the Children Amalgam Trials (CATS) were completed and published, followed by an immediate media/public relations campaign claiming that, with the two studies, dental amalgams had definitely been shown to be safe for children (the implication being that they must be safe for everyone, so what should adults be worried about?). The DAMS newsletter published a detailed analysis showing that the study’s toxicological questions had not even been completed yet, and the data itself showed signs of mercury retention, particularly in boys. Critics of the studies said that these clinical trials were highly unethical pointing to the experimentation on young children from an orphanage, lured into participation with incentive gifts. But the big media ran with it without mentioning the research defects.

2009 FDA issues an amalgam rule

For decades, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had been dancing around the dental amalgam issue, failing to classify it (i.e., moderate risk, highest risk -requiring a proof of safety?), and finally on July 28, 2009, it did come out with an amalgam “rule.” It offered no protection to the public, and it looked like it had been written by the amalgam industry and the ADA.

The rule said: there was no reason to be careful of amalgam use in children (citing the defective CAT studies); no reason to be cautious about its use in pregnant women; no need for caution for people with neurological disorders (mercury is a notorious neurotoxin) or kidney problems; and no need to inform the patient that amalgam fillings contain mercury.

Dr Margaret Hamburg MD

Obama appointee, Dr Margaret Hamburg, MD, was the FDA commissioner at the time, and she participated in shaping the rule even though she had a glaring conflict of interest: she had served on the board of Henry Schein, Inc, America’s largest amalgam distributor and had received several hundreds of thousands of dollars for serving on its board.

The Global Mercury Ban Treaty

For many years, the countries of the world met annually to hammer out a global ban on mercury. In October 2013, 139 countries gathered in Minimata, Japan, to sign the treaty. While the treaty did help the environment by cracking down on mercury in thermometers, thermostats, and other industrial uses, it was very weak in its mention of dental amalgam. It also totally sidestepped mercury in vaccines, where it is injected directly into the human body as thimerosal, a preservative. So, it was a sweetheart deal for the ADA and for big pharma and its toxic vaccines. As far as protecting the public from its worst exposures to mercury, amalgams and vaccines, the reality was that the treaty missed the mark. But the annual global meetings were productive in giving a chance for the people gathered to share information about the dental amalgam issue and gave many of them the resolve to go back home and work for an amalgam ban in their own countries.

Conclusion

The dental-medical/political-media establishment in the USA is very wedded to what appears to be a dental amalgam mercury cover-up. The media seems to have a pact to stay on message with the cover-up. Deep motives for this misconduct could possibly include: 1) avoiding the embarrassment and shame of being wrong on a hugely important public health issue and the resulting loss of funding and power, 2) a possible desire to  boost the profits of big pharma (people with illnesses and disorders provide a steady flow of customers for big pharma, and you can note that the biggest contributors to the ADA Health Foundation, in the million dollar category, are Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline), 3) possible population reduction (mercury is a reproductive toxin, causing birth defects and miscarriages), and 4) possibly mind control (mercury weakens a person’s mental clarity, perhaps making a person more willing to be a cog in a machine, guided by media messages, and by governmental authority figures).

Getting America, Canada, and the UK to ban amalgam mercury fillings looks daunting. Getting the media to cover the important issues of mercury and other major toxins also appears daunting. But many people out there are hungry for truth and for protecting freedom. Perhaps together we can all vow to carry on, so that the torch of truth and freedom never dies.

Amalgam to be banned across Europe

April, 2023

This article by Ann-Marie Lidmark was translated from Swedish to English by Marta Sonnenblick, a DAMS coordinator in California

Our note: This ban of amalgam mercury fillings applies across the European Union (EU). On January 31, 2020 the United Kingdom officially exited the EU; recall that the UK includes Scotland and Northern Ireland. So, the amalgam ban throughout the EU, as described in the article below, does not include the UK.

Beginning January 1st, 2025, all use of amalgam dental fillings is prohibited in Europe.

Amalgam consists of 50 percent mercury and mercury vapor is released throughout the life of the amalgam filling. That leak can make sensitive people very ill. The environment also takes a beating.

The European amalgam ban has been worked on by the [Swedish] Dental Health Association for several decades. The ban is clearly a great victory for this organization and its sister organizations in the rest of Europe. And, not the least, it is a victory for everyone who has been poisoned by their amalgam fillings.

It is also interesting that Europe has phased out amalgam fillings for both health and environmental reasons. The Swedish ban [of 2009] unfortunately focused solely on the environment, which led to neither dentists nor the Social Security Administration taking the risks of mercury use in dentistry seriously.

Mercury

The authorities talk about 0.6 grams of mercury on average per filling, but that is not true. Most amalgam fillings contain significantly more. A normal amalgam filling can contain from one to three grams of mercury.

A little mercury vapor always leaks from the fillings when chewing, consuming hot drinks, salty food, etc. Of the vapor that you inhale, 80 percent is taken up by the small blood vessels of the lungs and is then transported with the blood to the various organs of the body. Mercury disturbs the body’s biochemistry to the highest degree.

Extensive health risk

Amalgam’s mercury content carries major risks for health, but also for the environment. For health reasons, the EU had already banned amalgam for sensitive groups in 2018. That partial ban covered children under 15, pregnant and breastfeeding women. Since then, work has been going on for a total ban. The Swedish government, its authorities and the [Swedish] Dental Health Association have been strongly pushing for it.

“The decision means big gains for health,” says Florian Schulze, head of the European Network for Environmental Medicine, which helped us and our sister organizations in Europe push the issue towards parliamentarians in the EU.

Charlie Brown and Florian Schulze have been driving the effort to bring about an amalgam ban in Europe together with an El parliamentarian.

However, there are a few exceptions to the total amalgam ban and that includes both the Czech Republic and Slovenia; both of those countries will have another year and a half to complete the decommissioning of amalgams. That provision was a compromise that was forced in order to get the decision through.

The export of mercury amalgams from Europe is also banned

All countries in Europe are covered by the amalgam export ban, which also applies from January 1, 2025. The issue of an export ban has been urgent to pursue as mercury from amalgam can be used in small-scale gold mining, which creates very serious health problems for the workers. Other less toxic alternatives exist.

Fluoride on Trial

Fluoride on Trial

Fluoride on Trial
Will the EPA be compelled by a federal court to end the dangerous fluoridation of drinking water?

THE TOPLINE

  • A federal court will decide, in a few weeks time, whether the EPA needs to stop allowing the fluoridation of water.
  • Fluoride exposure has been linked to neurological effects and a host of other bad health outcomes.
  • Fluoridation is not only dangerous for your health, it is unnecessary.

Groups suing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the fluoridation of American drinking water are now awaiting a decision from a federal court after the trial ended last week. The basis of the suit was the EPA’s rejection of the groups’ Citizens Petition calling on the agency to end the addition of fluoridation chemicals into drinking water due to fluoride’s neurotoxicity. It’s high time fluoridation ceases, as numerous studies have linked fluoride exposure with lower IQ and other health problems.

Substantial evidence links elevated fluoride levels with neurological effects, especially lower IQ. Fluoride also accumulates in the body, including in the pineal gland, other endocrine organs and the skeletal systemContinued exposure is known to disrupt calcium and vitamin D metabolism and contributes to calcification in tissues and blood vessels. A National Research Council (NRC) report from 2006 concluded that the EPA’s standard for fluoride in drinking water is unsafe and should be lowered. The report highlighted damage that can be done to the teeth, bones, brain, endocrine system, thyroid, and pineal gland—all from drinking fluoride. In 2014, fluoride was added to the list of chemicals “known to cause developmental neurotoxicity in human beings” in a review published by Lancet Neurology; only 12 chemicals are on this list.

According to the Citizen’s Petition filed by the Fluoride Action Network, Organic Consumers Association, Food & Water Watch, and others, in the years since that 2006 NRC report, there have been dozens of human studies looking at fluoride’s effect on cognition, with all but a few (46 out of 54) finding statistically significant associations between fluoride and cognitive deficits; three studies since 2006 have found adverse effects on the fetal brain.

Fluoride has been added to drinking water in towns across the United States since 1945 for the purpose of improving dental health. Now, 66% of people in the US receive drinking water with added fluoride.

Even if there weren’t any safety concerns with drinking fluoride, there would still be the question of whether we need to do it in the first place. The world is different than it was 100 years ago, especially when it comes to dental health. Most of us use toothpaste, and many people use fluoridated toothpaste, making fluoride in water unnecessary. Other parts of the world that do not fluoridate their water, like Western Europe, have seen dental decay rates decline just as much as they have in the US.

Fluoride is typically delivered as sodium monofluorophosphate or sodium fluoride in dental products and as fluorosilicic acid (a by-product of fertilizer manufacturing) in municipal water. These are chemical forms that are not found in nature and as such, behave very differently in our bodies. You can read more about integrative dental health herehere, and here.

We will keep you abreast of the court’s decision as we learn more. It’s unfortunate that an agency tasked with protecting us from pollutants must be sued in an effort to force it to do the right thing in the public interest. However, we are finding, repeatedly, this is par for the course when agencies are captured by the interests they are meant to regulate.
