Alzheimer’s – Byproduct of Infection?

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2016/06/09/alzheimers-disease-brain-infection.

Harvard Researchers are saying that beta-alyloid proteins are part of your innate immune response and may be beneficial as they trap foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses; however, these traps form the plaque seen in Alzheimer’s.

Study author Rudolph E. Tanzi, Ph.D., of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital states, “Each plaque had a single bacterium at its center.”  Mice that didn’t produce beta-amyloid were at greater risk of dying from the infection and did not have any plaques in their brains.”

They are theorizing that a small amount of beta-amyloid is protective whereas larger amounts could be damaging, and similarly to leaky gut syndrome, we tend to have a leaky blood-brain barrier the older we get.

Ruth Itzhaki, Ph.D., professor emeritus of molecular neurobiology at Britain’s University of Manchester, and colleagues in 1991 linked Alzheimer’s to herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) – the type that causes cold sores.  There are currently more than 100 studies supporting this link.

Itzhaki states,
” … [W]e propose that infectious agents, including HSV-1, Chlamydia pneumonia, and spirochetes, reach the CNS [central nervous system] and remain there in latent form.  These agents can undergo reactivation in the brain during aging, as the immune system declines, and during different types of stress (which similarly reactivate HSV-1 in the periphery).  The consequent neuronal damage — caused by direct viral action and by virus-induced inflammation — occurs recurrently, leading to (or acting as a cofactor for) progressive synaptic dysfunction, neuronal loss, and ultimately AD [Alzheimer’s disease].  Such damage includes the induction of Aβ [amyloid beta] which, initially, appears to be only a defense mechanism.”

In addition to viruses, bacteria, and fungus, an infectious protein called TDP-43 (think prions and Mad Cow Disease) has also been linked to AD as well as low Vitamin D (helps build the immune system and brain chemicals that protect brain cells).

http://www.examiner.com/article/kris-kristofferson-has-lyme-disease-memory-loss-misdiagnosed-as-alzheimer-s  Singer, Kris Kristofferson, went through this private hell.  He was wrongly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s but had Lyme Disease.  For years doctors told Kristofferson it was either Alzheimer’s or dementia, and may have been the result of blows to his head from boxing, football and rugby.  The medication he was given gave him bad side effects and didn’t help.

Sound familier?

Since starting treatment for Lyme Kristofferson “has made remarkable strides.”  His wife Lisa said,

“all of the sudden he was back.” Although he still has some bad days, there are other days when he is “perfectly normal,” she said.

Please tell your family and friends who have an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis this story.  We need to look out for one another.

“University Distinguished Professor Kim Lewis, who leads the Lyme disease research team, is now expanding that therapeutic reach with the help of a $1.5 million grant from the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Foundation.

The team is pursuing four arms of treatment-related research at Northeastern’s Antimicrobial Discovery Center, which Lewis directs.

They are: a mouse study of a regimen that eradicated the bacterium in the test tube, setting the stage for human trials; antibiotic cocktails using existing drugs; strategies to discover new drugs that selectively target the Lyme bacterium; and ways to alter the composition of the microbiome—the community of microorganisms inhabiting the human body—to stop the autoimmune reactions that characterize the disease.

All four show exciting promise. The grant, Lewis says, “will give us the flexibility to test our approaches in parallel, which will save us an enormous amount of time.”

Borrelia Hiding in Worms Causing Chronic Brain Diseases

Here’s a Feb 2025 Review: Filarial Nematodes Parasitizing Tick Vectors: Unraveling global patterns in Species Diversity, Host Associations, and Interactions With Tick-borne Pathogens.

In short, while ticks are known to spread filarial nematodes of medical and veterinary importance, even now, very little is known.  However, some recent reports have shown success using using doxycycline and ivermectin (dewormer) for some patients with Lyme disease.

Pathologist Alan MacDonald has done it again.

He found three strains of borrelia living in parasitic nematode worms, worm eggs, or larvae in the brain tissue of 19 autopsies.

MacDonald states that both worms and borrelia can cause devastating brain damage and that:

“while patients are wrongly declared free of Lyme and other tick-borne infections, in reality, too often they contract serious neurodegenerative diseases which can kill them.”

MacDonald made his discovery from 10 specimens from the Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Center Tissue Bank.  All 10 showed evidence of borrelia infected nematodes.  Five patients who died of Glioblastoma multiforme, a malignant brain tumor, and four patients who died of Lewy Body dementia also showed infected nematodes.

MacDonald used FISH, Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization, which uses molecular beacon DNA probes to identify pieces of borrelia’s genetic material which fluoresce under the microscope with a 100% DNA match.

In other words, this is no mistake.

Lyme discoverer, Willy Burgdorfer, wrote of finding nematodes in tick guts way back in 1984 and in 2014 University of New Haven researcher, Eva Sapi, found 22% of nymphs and 30% of adult Ixodes ticks carried nematodes.

So where’s the CDC?  I’ll give you a hint: it has something to do with Zika.  https://madisonarealymesupportgroup.com/2016/03/08/fixation-on-zikapolio/

Fluoride – Not What You Think

Fluoridated water is another example of a medical disconnect that needs to be exposed.

MSIDS patients have weak immune systems due to stealth pathogens invading Killer T-Cells which cause the body to attack itself.  We need to hunt to ground everything that is weakening our bodies, and one of those “things” is fluoride.

Hailed by the Centers for Disease Control as one of the top ten public health achievements of the 20th century, water fluoridation is something most of us assume to be safe and effective. But new science has upended this assumption, revealing that fluoride is a developmental neurotoxin and an endocrine disruptor. The CDC tells us that drinking fluoride decreases tooth decay, at best, by 25%. That is one-half to one cavity per person over a lifetime. Is one less cavity worth risking a child’s long-term brain and thyroid health? It’s time to rethink this very old practice.

In OUR DAILY DOSE, filmmaker Jeremy Seifert (GMO OMG) lays out the dangers of water fluoridation informatively and creatively, highlighting the most current research and interviewing top-tier doctors, activists, and attorneys close to the issue. Through thoughtful examination of old beliefs and new science, the film alerts us to the health threat present in the water and beverages we rely on every day. This is an eye-opening look at how we have less control over our health than we may have thought.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2016/05/21/our-daily-dose-fluoride-documentary.aspx?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20160521Z1&et_cid=DM105855&et_rid=1494753110

“Scientific investigations have revealed that fluoride is an endocrine disrupting chemical, and a developmental neurotoxin that impacts short-term and working memory, and lowers IQ in children.

It has been implicated as a contributing factor in the rising rates of both attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and thyroid disease.

Indeed, fluoride was used in Europe to reduce thyroid activity in hyperthyroid patients as late as the 1970s, and reduced thyroid function is associated with fluoride intakes as low as 0.05 to 0.1 mg fluoride per kilogram body weight per day (mg/kg/day).

Children are particularly at risk for adverse effects of overexposure, and in April 2015, the US government admitted that the “optimal” level of fluoride recommended since 1962 had in fact been too high.

As a result, over 40 percent of American teens show signs of fluoride overexposure — a condition known as dental fluorosis. In some areas, dental fluorosis rates are as high as 70 to 80 percent, with some children suffering from advanced forms.

So, for the first time, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) lowered its recommended level of fluoride in drinking water by 40 percent, from an upper limit of 1.2 milligrams per liter (mg/L) to 0.7 mg/L.

The HHS said it will evaluate dental fluorosis rates among children in 10 years to assess whether they were correct about this new level being protective against dental fluorosis.

But just what is the acceptable level of harm in the name of cavity prevention?

A number of studies have shown that children with moderate to severe dental fluorosis score worse on tests measuring cognitive skills and IQ than peers without fluorosis — a clear revelation highlighted in the film, as some still insist that dental fluorosis is nothing more than a cosmetic issue.

As stated, fluoride is a drug, and research into the health effects of fluoride are based on pharmaceutical grade fluoride. However, a majority of water authorities do not even use pharmaceutical grade fluoride; they use hydrofluosilicic acid, or hexafluorosilicic acid — toxic waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry, which are frequently contaminated with heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lead, and other toxins.

This is a key point that many fluoride proponents fail to address when arguing for its use.”

Interestingly, 97% of Western European countries have stopped or have never fluoridated their water and have seen the exact same reduction in dental cavities as the U.S., proving it’s not fluoride doing the work here.

The best way to prevent cavities is by eating real, fresh food, avoiding sugar and processed food, getting plenty of omega -3 fats, and keeping the mouth clean.

Lyme or Arthritis?

http://jbjs.org/content/98/9/721  A new study in the May 4 issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery reviewed the records of 189 patients under age 18 who presented to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) with excess fluid in the knee between 2005 and 2013. Of these patients, 23 had culture-positive septic arthritis; 26, culture-negative septic arthritis; and 140, Lyme disease or 74% of the total children included.

It also identified four symptoms that are predictive of septic arthritis, which is considered a medical emergency requiring surgical irrigation (flushing) and drainage to prevent rapid and irreversible destruction of the cartilage surrounding the knee.

Knee pain with a short range of motion
A C-reactive protein (CRP test; used to measure inflammation) of >4.0 mg/L
Fever
Age younger than 2

“The probability of septic arthritis with any one factor present was 18 percent compared to 100 percent will all four factors present,” said study author Wudbhav N. Sankar, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Our study offers a useful prediction algorithm to help distinguish septic arthritis from a knee effusion caused by Lyme disease in children.”

Lyme disease, on the other other-hand, is treated with antibiotics.  In addition to knee swelling and pain, both conditions may cause a fever, swelling of other joints, irritability and an inability to bear weight on the affected extremity. Common laboratory tests to measure inflammation, as well as white blood cell counts, also may be elevated.

It would be prudent to take the child through various checklists as MSIDS (multi systemic infectious disease syndrome or Lyme with friends) is a clinical diagnosis as the tests often come back negative for Lyme (borrelia) as well as the various coinfections; however, children are often not perceptive about what they are feeling physically in their body and/or they have a difficult time relaying verbally.  This is where parents need to be their child’s advocate, do the reading and understand the concepts, and fight for your child.  A person’s chances are always better if MSIDS is caught early.
