“Tighter budget puts bite on Lyme disease reporting” (WI)

Excerpt from the article:

“Citing budgetary constraints, state health officials have relaxed the reporting requirements for local health departments confronted with possible cases of Lyme disease.

Excerpt from the article:

“Starting this summer, local health officials throughout Wisconsin are no longer required to investigate or report cases unless the patient exhibits a rash recognizable by its bulls-eye appearance.

Diep Hoang Johnson, an epidemiologist with the state Department of Health Services, said the new protocol could eliminate up to 30 percent of cases. But dwindling resources, Johnson said, have left local health departments unable to keep up with the disease.

“We had to do something,” she said. “It takes so much work.” ”
