A New Rapid Test for Lyme Disease

Researchers get closer to rapid diagnostic test for Lyme disease

Borrelia burgdorferi

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology describes a new rapid assay for Lyme disease that could lead to a practical test for use by healthcare providers.

The researchers found the assay, which uses several biomarkers to detect Lyme disease infection, was more sensitive than current laboratory-based tests when diagnosing Lyme disease early after suspected infection.

The research was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a spiral-shaped bacterium transmitted by deer ticks. Many cases of Lyme disease can be treated effectively with a short course of antibiotics.

However, Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose because it causes a wide range of symptoms, from fever and rash to neurologic and cardiac symptoms and joint pain. Current Lyme disease tests also can miss an infection if performed too early.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a two-step blood test for diagnosing Lyme disease that looks for antibodies against Lyme disease. These tests require specialized laboratory equipment and can require days or weeks to return results.

Faster, more sensitive Lyme test?

The authors of the paper plan to develop a simpler, faster, more sensitive test that could be used at the point of care during a single visit to a healthcare provider.

The researchers first screened a set of known Lyme disease biomarkers for their ability to indicate infection. They then tested for the top three biomarkers on samples from people with early Lyme disease, from healthy individuals from areas where Lyme disease is endemic, and from people with Lyme arthritis.

This was compared to results obtained using the standard two-step testing procedure.

Overall, the new set of biomarkers was more sensitive than standard Lyme disease tests. These biomarkers were better at picking up signs of Lyme disease infection in early stage samples—possibly because they were able to detect antibodies that peak in the first two to six weeks after a person is infected with Lyme disease.

These results open the possibility of developing a point-of-care test for Lyme disease. The assay will require more refinement and testing before it can be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, the researchers say that these results show great potential.

Please note a few things about this test:

  • It’s for EARLY detection –  NOT for those who have struggled with symptoms for weeks to years.
  • It ONLY tests for Borrelia burgdorferi – ONE strain of Lyme disease. To the best of my knowledge there are still 300 strains of borrelia and counting worldwide and 100 strains of borrelia and counting in the U.S. These strains are influx as new strains are continually being discovered.
  • It DOES NOT test for coinfections which can cause symptoms identical to Lyme. It’s also common for patients to be infected with numerous pathogens. For instance a person might be infected with Lyme, Babesia, Bartonella, and Mycoplasma. There are nearly 20 diseases transmitted by ticks.
Lyme disease has ALWAYS been something that demands a clinical diagnosis by a trained health care provider.

While I appreciate new technology and efforts to simplify a complex illness – this illness is NOT for dummies. The best advice I can offer health care workers is to get educated!  Do not be lazy.  People are literally suffering untold agony, and dying from this.

As a follow-up to yesterday’s email on the subject of “Lyme disease vaccines” (which has been posted to the Change.org Petition Site  with 83,225 signatures), patients who have the persistent form of the infection have been left to fend for themselves. Aside from turning a blind eye to the devastation there has been no government solution to the growing number of horribly disabled patients as exposed in the Under our Skindocumentary:

It has been said time and time again that almost everyone knows someone whose life has been ruined as a result of Lyme disease.

Quote from Benjamin Franklin:

“Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.”

So where is the public outrage? Before you label me as an “anti-vaxxer” let me ask the following question to those who have not been affected:

Why have you seen the devastation and kept silent?

Do you think this couldn’t happen to you or a loved one? Well think again because the odds are stacked against you as the current testing is no better than a coin toss, treatment is inadequate, medical training is deplorable and there is absolutely no disease control whatsoever.

A vaccine if it ever does come to market isn’t going to save the hundreds of thousands if not millions worldwide who are suffering from a disease that has destroyed lives, ended careers while leaving its victim in financial ruin. If Lyme disease is “Hard to Catch And Easy to Halt” as published in the 2001 New York Times article [1] why do we need a vaccine? All the evidence is pointing to vaccine development as the root cause of the mishandling of the disease. Patient testimony all across America (and the globe) is describing a life-altering/life threatening infection which has been misclassified as a simple nuisance disease by the defendants named in the Racketeering Lawsuit [2] and endorsed by the US Centers for Disease Control.

We need a CURE NOW and a vaccine is useless for the lives left in limbo desperate to recover their health.

Enough with the damn vaccine; acknowledge persistent infection and develop a cure for this antibiotic resistant/tolerant superbug and do this on a federal level with unlimited funds NOT on a shoestring as others are attempting to do privately. [3]

My husband and I tried Disulfiram and were up to the full dose for a solid month.
Unfortunately, I had what doctors call an allergic reaction to it.

I worry particularly about single patients that do not have someone monitoring them while taking this drug. Significant side effects hardly expresses what I went through.
 A $40 drug nearly killed me.

I don’t want to stop you from considering it, but please, please, discuss what happened to me with your doctor and read the “Disulfiram psychosis update” link and share with your doctor before taking it.

My initial side effects were:

  • converging eyes/vision
  • stomach bloating/gas/burping
  • inability to orgasm

Independent Canadian Tick researcher, John Scott, states:

“The climate change range expansion model is what the authorities have been using to rationalize how they have done nothing for more than thirty years. It’s a huge cover-up scheme that goes back to the 1980’s. The grandiose scheme was a nefarious plot to let doctors off the hook from having to deal with this debilitating disease. I caught onto it very quickly. Most people have been victims of it ever since.  This climate change ‘theory’ is all part of a well-planned scheme. Even the ticks are smarter than the people who’ve concocted this thing.  Climate change has nothing to do with tick movement. Blacklegged ticks are ecoadaptive, and tolerate wide temperature fluctuations…..It’s all a red herring to divert your attention.”

Please understand the DOD, DARPA, & EPA are funding this very “climate change” research.

Although conspiracy theorists have suggested — falsely — that Lyme disease was created in a U.S. military lab, it is true that in the years following World War II, the U.S. employed top German scientists who explored the tick’s potential in biological warfare for Nazi Germany. The researchers were investigating the tick’s ability to spread pathogens across wide areas with the potential to incapacitate entire populations.

Seventy-five years later, the tick timebomb is detonating on its own. Thanks to climate change, globalization, and other factors, ticks are not only proliferating but also becoming more malignant, more aggressive, and more likely to carry infection. A public health crisis is hiding in plain sight.

Bhattacharji got the “tick timebomb” portion correct but not the climate change non-issue regarding ticks.

I will state once again, ticks will be the last species on earth besides the IRS.
